Choosing the Right Pool Pump & Filter Tips
When you build a new pool in your backyard, you are making a big investment in your home. In order to make that investment last as long as possible, it is important that you choose the appropriate pool pump and filter for your system. The right swimming pool pump and the filter will make your system run better, help your pool stay cleaner, and cut down on the number of chemicals you have to purchase and add to your pool.

1) Measure Your Pool
First, you need to measure your pool. Get a tape measure, and measure the length, width, and depth of your pool. If the measurements are not in exact feet, convert fractions of a foot to decimals. You should measure the actual depth of your pool’s water level. Do not use the depth that your pool is capable of holding.
2) Calculate the Area
Calculate the surface area of the swimming pool by multiplying the length by width.
3) Calculate the Water In Your Pool
Now you need to calculate how many gallons of water your swimming pool holds. If your swimming pool is rectangular, you can use this formula: Determining the Average Depth, (shallow end + Deep End / 2 = AD). Rectangle Pool Gallons (Length x Width x AD x 7.5 = Gallons. (There are 7.5 gallons in a cubic foot of water)(1′ length, 1′ width, 1′ volume = 7.5 gallons multiply surface area by depth by 7.9. The product of this equation equals the volume. If your pool is not perfectly rectangular, look for a pool volume calculator online. This will help you to determine the volume of swimming pools of other shapes.
4) Calculate the Minimum Flow Rate
The water in your pool needs to make a complete circulation every eight hours. For this to happen, you need to figure out the minimum flow rate for your swimming pool. To calculate the minimum flow rate, take the number of gallons of water that your pool holds and divide it by 8. Then, divide that quotient by 60. The resulting number is the minimum flow rate.
5) Calculate the Maximum Flow Rate
Next, you need to figure out the maximum flow rate for your swimming pool. The maximum flow rate is determined by the size of the pipes. 3-inch pipes can handle 150 gallons per minute; 2-inch pipes can take 73 gallons per minute, and 1.5-inch pipes can handle 45 gallons per minute.
6) Choose the Right Pool Pump
Choose a pool pump that has a flow rate somewhere in between the minimum and maximum for your swimming pool.
7) Choose the Right Pool Filter
To choose a pool filter, use the pool surface area and consult an online filter sizing chart.
8) Decide on Sand or Cartridge Filter
Decide whether you want a diatomaceous earth (DE) filter, sand filter, or cartridge filter. DE filters are the most expensive, but get pool water the cleanest. Cartridge filters are easiest to care for, and if cleaned every 4 to 6 months they should last 2 to 4 years. Sand filters are the least expensive but don’t clean the water as well as other types of filters.
9) Check Manufacturer’s Specs
Check the manufacturer’s specifications to make sure that the maximum flow rate of the filter you are considering is suitable for the size of your pool pump.
10) Choose the Largest Filter
For the least maintenance, choose the largest filter that your pool and pump can accommodate. A larger filter will clean the pool water better, clog less often, and require less work on your part.
